At the 7th ASEM Summit in 2008, there was an urgent need to address the challenges of a pandemic outbreak. Therefore ASEM leaders stated their determination to combat a possible human influenza pandemic.
Following this strong political statement, the Government of Japan took the lead. The ASEM Initiative for the Rapid Containment of Pandemic Influenza was thus launched at the 9th ASEM Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in May 2009 in Hanoi, Vietnam. This initiative is a platform to deal with public health issues between Asia and Europe, and to establish a stockpile of anti-viral drugs and equipment.
The ASEF Public Health Network is a unique participatory platform that encourages public health dialogue in Asia and Europe. The Network provides space for health and non-health sector actors to share their knowledge and experience. This facilitates multi-stakeholder partnerships between representatives from governments, international organisations, business corporations and non-profit organisations.
